Samsung prepares major performance upgrades with One UI 8.5 Beta 4

One UI 8.5 beta 4 major performance upgrades

Samsung is gearing up to release the fourth beta build for One UI 8.5 as soon as next week, and it may deliver more than just routine bug fixes. According to leaker Ice Universe, the upcoming update could significantly boost performance on the Galaxy S25 series thanks to a substantial kernel upgrade.

The current under-development build, identified by a firmware version ending in ZZAA, reportedly jumps from kernel version 6.6.77 to 6.6.98—a leap of 21 versions in one go. This marks the first time Samsung has upgraded the kernel since One UI 8.5 development kicked off for the Galaxy S25 lineup.

In Android devices, the kernel functions as the bridge connecting software to hardware components. Upgrading it can bring improvements across multiple areas, including security, performance, memory optimization, and file system handling. It can also deliver updated drivers for hardware components, potentially boosting their performance and reliability.

The tipster claims that a Galaxy S25 Ultra running the upgraded kernel already feels noticeably smoother and more responsive. They point to better animations, overall fluidity, and improved touch response compared to earlier builds. That said, the real test will come once the One UI 8.5 Beta 4 update officially goes live next week.
