What Exactly is Jio Space Fiber, and How Does It Work?
Jio Space Fiber is India’s first satellite-based internet broadband service. It can provide high-speed internet access to areas where it’s not accessible generally, including mountains, remote villages, and islands.
Currently, telecom companies provide internet via network towers. But it’s nearly impossible to install network towers everywhere. Sometimes, due to a non-suitable location, while the main reason is high installation and maintenance costs.
Jio Space Fiber eliminates these problems, and hence, it’s a better solution.
Most people think this technology will connect their devices to the satellite to access the internet. But, it doesn’t work that way.
Jio Space Fiber requires installation at your location. If you’ve ever used a direct-to-home (DTH) television service, such as Tata Sky, Videocon, or Dish TV, you can easily understand how the Jio Space Fiber works.
To use Jio Space Fiber, you must install a satellite dish on your roof or balcony and a router inside your home.
The satellite dish will connect to the satellite to send and receive information. It will then transfer the information to your router, which will send it to your device.
That’s how the Jio Space Fiber or any other satellite-based internet service works.
Jio Space Fiber Plans and Price
Jio Space Fiber was announced in India during the IMC 2023 event. At the event, the company showcased its demo, however, the Jio Space Fiber plans and pricing are yet to be revealed.
But, Jio has promised to keep the Jio Space Fiber “high affordable”.
Starlink is also a satellite-based internet broadband service, owned by Elon Musk. It’s currently not available in India, however, the company is in talks with the Indian government, as per reports.
Starlink plans start at $120 (~INR 9,990). There’s a one-time installation fee of $599 (~INR 49,900), which includes a Starlink terminal, a mounting tripod, and two Wi-Fi routers.
The Starlink pricing might look scary if you are willing to get Jio Space Fiber. But, I am very hopeful that it will be highly affordable. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and wait for the plans to be announced.
Jio Space Fiber Availability and Booking
Jio Space Fiber availability is currently limited to four of India’s most remote locations, including Gir (Gujrat), Korba (Chattisgarh), Nabarangpur (Odisha), and ONGC-Jorhat (Assam).
Jio Space Fiber is expected to roll out in early 2024. So, we’ll have to wait a couple of months for the full release.
Talking about Jio Space Fiber booking, currently, the company has no plans to take pre-booking. The company should reveal more details in the coming weeks or months.
